Hidden & Transient Populations
Small-area estimates of hidden and transient population sub-groups
Hidden and Transient (H&T) populations are not captured within the official ‘usually-resident’ population estimates produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
This includes:
-
People living at secondary addresses
-
Visitors and tourists
-
Irregular migrants (i.e. people in the UK without legal residence)
These groups tend to be ‘hidden’ in their nature or have a relatively short-term and ‘transient’ impact upon local populations. For a range of sectors, these H&T populations can have a substantial permanent or seasonal uplift on the populations of an area.
Using evidence from a mix of Census, survey and administrative sources, plus published academic research, the H&T Population Model provides ‘Low’, ‘Medium’, and ‘High’ H&T population estimates for output areas in England and Wales, which can be aggregated to bespoke geographies.
